Hi, guys —

I have searched the Internet trying to find out the Church's thoughts and views are on
Reiki healing.

I hope you can help me out in this matter.

Thank you.

  { What are the Church's thoughts and views on Reiki and Reiki healing? }

Richard replied:

HI, Lana —

Catholic Answers Live and Fr. Mitch Pacwa did a radio show about it on August 19, but it is unavailable due to music licensing restrictions. Fr. Mitch did a thirteen part series on the New Age Movement called Who do you say I am? for EWTN that was excellent!

The audio files from portions of that series and other New Age audio files can be found here.

Here are some other web pages I found that specifically address the issue of Reiki Healing:

You can also try the Catholic Answers custom search and periodically check our knowledge base.

The gist of the comments about Reiki on Fr. Pacwa's radio show with Catholic Answers -
August 19, 1999 is:

  • The central idea in Reiki is that there is an all-present animating life-force, called chi — which comes from Taoism.
  • Christianity has a different idea: it describes an entity called the soul, and says the soul gives life to the body. The soul, created directly by God, cannot be affected, manipulated, adjusted, or assisted by any practices of any human being, even a Reiki practitioner.
    The soul does not get out of whack or get into a state where it needs adjustment.
  • Christianity already offers a way of spiritual healing which is described in Scripture:
    it is the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, in which we encounter Christ, the Physician. The Catechism describes it here.

In addition, here is some good related reading.
