Your husband is reading trash. This book has been widely debunked and criticized as a work of distortion, fiction and utter anti-Catholic bias.

This same Pope was heralded by the top Rabbi of Jerusalem for his commendable efforts in helping the Jews, and for often being the sole voice condemning the brutality against the Jews.
A tree was planted in Jerusalem in his honor in the most sacred place for the Jews — hardly the response to a pro-Hitler Nazi, as your husband's author suggests.

If I am able, I will find the very useful articles I have read outlining some of the flaws of this terrible book, and send them along.

Yes, this is more anti-Catholic propaganda but there is an on-line article by James Akin of Catholic Answers that will allow you to refute it. The article is titled:

How Pius XII protected the Jews

I think you will find it interesting.

There is also a short four page article that was written in (the former) This Rock magazine, the February 1997 edition titled:
