Francesco Maddalena wrote:

Hi,

My question is in regards the Church and slavery. The accusation that the Church supported slavery is a common perception and, most often than not, a wrong one.

Being a Catholic who likes to be informed, I did already some research myself, using useful web sites like www.NewAdvent.com, so I know that throughout the history the Church has often been against slavery and promoted human rites, although in a different way than modern social (and political) movements.

Do you have any extra resources where I can find exactly the relationship between:

  • the Church
  • slavery and
  • human rights

in history, preferably from the first century until now?

Thank you for your answers.

Francesco

The very concept of human rights stems from the Judeo-Christian concept of the human person created by God. The answers to the question you are asking can be found in an encyclopedic.
