Alvin Blossom wrote:

Hi, guys —

I think I'm correct in saying that the Church teaches that Catholics are forbidden from using artificial contraception because it's "not natural".

  • In that case, what is "natural" about open heart surgery, kidney transplants or similar procedures?

Thank you,

Alvin

  { If artificial contraception is unnatural, why isn't open heart surgery or similar practices reproved? }

Mary Ann replied:

Dear Alvin —

You are incorrect in your understanding of why the Church teaches that contraception is immoral.

It is wrong because it wills to separate the unitive and procreative aspects of the conjugal act within Marriage.

Mary Ann

Paul replied:

HI, Alvin —

I would just add that separating the unitive (love) from the procreative (life) dimensions of sexuality is unnatural.

It violates natural law because the trajectory of human nature is to promote, nurture, and enhance human life:

  • biological
  • intellectual
  • social, and
  • religious

life. Open heart surgery and liver transplants promote and enhance life while contraception intentionally thwarts life.

Paul
