I recently started taking RCIA classes to become Catholic. I enjoy the classes very much.

I am 28 years old and I have never been baptized or a part of the Church and I am very very excited. My question is my boyfriend and I have been together three years and I recently found out I am pregnant. We are very excited and have decided to get married.

I am confused about how this will effect my RCIA classes.

  • Is it permissible for me to keep attending RCIA classes though I got pregnant
    out of wedlock?

My boyfriend is Catholic and we are both excited about raising our future children in the Catholic religion.

Dear Amy —

Congratulations!

You may certainly continue your RCIA classes to become Catholic. You must also live together as brother and sister until you are married. Talk to the pastor about this situation.

The Church does not like to marry people who may be marrying only because they are pregnant. The Church also has classes to take for marriage, usually called pre-Cana classes.

You are in a unique situation, so talk to the pastor.
