Samuel Hermann wrote:

Hi, guys —

  • What happens to Marines or Soldiers that have killed someone during a battle or war?
  • Can we still go to Heaven if we lead good lives before, and after, the incident?

I am a Marine (discharged now) and this question has been on my mind for a few years.

Thank you for your attention to my question.

Samuel

  { Can Marines still go to Heaven if they have killed someone but have returned to lead good lives? }

Mary Ann replied:

Dear Samuel —

Marines are supposed to kill people in war. The decision about the justness of a war belongs to the Commander-in-Chief and the Congress.

Unless a soldier knows that he is committing a war crime, like:

  • killing a non-combatant on purpose, or
  • killing the captured

there is no crime of which to repent.

The aim of a soldier in killing a combatant is, not the man's death but, the prevention of the harm the combatant seeks to do.

Mary Ann
