Basically, he was the good thief on the Cross who recognized that he and the other thief, Gestas, on the Cross with Jesus deserved their just punishment, but Jesus did not. Luke's Gospel states:
41 "We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong." Luke 23:41

and have no reason to doubt it's credibility. Under canonization it states:
The Catholic Church never formally canonized Saint Dismas, though he is regarded as a saint by virtue of Jesus saying, "you will be with me in Paradise" (Luke 23:43), and by local church traditions. The feast of St. Dismas is on the 25th of March, shared with the feast of The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
