Hi Judy,
While red is used to signify the Love of God, it is also used to signify the martyrdom of the saints, who shed their blood for Jesus, The Ultimate God-Man that was martyred for our sins and our salvation.
From a liturgical, priestly view maybe Fr. Jonathan has an opinion on your question.
In the past, I have always recollected purple being used throughout Holy Week but maybe this is just one of those small ‘t' traditions or customs that varies from each diocese.
