Erin,
The pope has no authority to make pronouncements on matters of science, unless it contradicts matters of faith, i.e., theories that suggest the universe is not created by God. It is simply not his jurisdiction. Catholics can give respect and weight to his opinion but they are not obliged to give assent to it.
As far as he is Gods literal representative, that is a misleading term.
The Catholic understanding of this role is the Vicar of Christ, simply a person charged with the ability to act on behalf of another (in a qualified capacity). He represents Christ in certain respects, but not all.
Popes are men but we do not view them as God though they be charged with responsibilities and have authority that is unique.
Peace,
Bob Kirby
