Hi, guys —

Hello again! I have a few questions about the Rosary.

  • How does it work?
  • What are the mysteries?
  • Do you pray the entire Rosary every day or just one bead or section of beads a day?
  • What is these things you call mysteries and decades?
  • How should I memorize them?

Thank you so much!

Kaylie Alioto

  { Can you answer some questions about the Rosary and how a non-Catholic should pray with it? }

Bob replied:

Kaylie,

The Rosary is a prayer formula, kind of like a recipe for a stew. Altogether, the prayers make-up something:

  • wonderful
  • powerful, and
  • simply awesome.

The Rosary consists of four sets of Mysteries. Many people pray the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious mysteries every day (and some, even the Luminous mysteries), yet if someone does just one of these sets of Mysteries daily, they have prayed the Rosary for that day.

If you can make time for it, do one set in the morning (the Joyful mysteries), a little later do the Sorrowful mysteries, and at bed do the Glorious or Luminous mysteries but even if that's too much, it takes just 10-15 minutes to pray one set of mysteries so just do one set a day.

I would memorize the mysteries over the long term but you can often find cards with the form at a local church or a Catholic bookstore.

For details on the mysteries, form, and prayers check out this web site:

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Hi Kaylie,

This is a common question; it's even in our searchable knowledge base.

There are a lot of quick answers there, so give it a try.

I searched the knowledge base for you and found a portion of this answer that should answer your question:

I used to run a free Rosary for Protestants program that sent Rosaries to seeking Protestants and non-Christians but no longer have the financial or operational means to do this anymore. Nevertheless, if you wish get your hands on a free Rosary just Google for one.

It's a great devotion because whether you are a Catholic Christian, Protestant Christian, or non-Christian, we are meditating on the lives of both Jesus, Our Lord, and Mary, His Mother and it has many blessings attached to praying it.

I hope this helps,

Mike
