Hi, guys —

I am a Catholic and I absolutely love our Church. I am also very interested in studying Apologetics. In all the books, CD's, and DVD's I have recently been looking at in relation to Apologetics, there is one topic I have not come across; one that my sister-in-law seems to find great fault with our Church.

She is under the impression the Catholic Church is the richest church in the world and is very wealthy. She is resentful about this and talks about it all the time. I don't know what to say to this statement.

  • How do I defend the Church in regards to this?

As far as I understand, the Catholic Church is the richest Church simply because it's the biggest. All money comes from the parishioners and is given to the priests as income to support themselves and their parishes so they can run them efficiently. There is no profit made.

  • Is this correct?

I don't know what to say to her but I'm tired of not being able to give her a proper answer.

Thank you for your time.

God bless,

Loesje

  { How do I reply to my sister-in-law's resentfulness that the Catholic Church is so rich? }

Bob replied:

Loesje,

Your sister-in-law will likely never be satisfied.

  • Do you recall how Jesus was treated?

Why do let her waste that oil on you when it could be sold and given to the poor?
(Mark 14:3-9)

Those with an axe to grind, will grind it even if it is God Himself whom they condemn — it is spiritual blindness. It is a commentary on them, not the Church.

The Church is the largest non-profit charitable organization in the world, doing the most for the poor worldwide, and there is no one close behind her.

Still these kind of critics will say She has all this property that could be sold. Her assets in the Vatican are a priceless heirloom that belong to all the faithful who make pilgrimages there and find in them a spiritual home. Selling them would provide a short supply of cash that would do no more to eradicate poverty than any of the other efforts made in decades past.

  • Also, who would be the new owners of these priceless heirlooms and what would they be used for?

It is a silly and thoughtless argument.

Finally, look at the new Pope, who has done more to advocate for simple living and help for the poor than anyone on the world stage.

  • Do they applaud him?

I doubt it. Take a lesson from Jesus and love these Pharisees despite their blindness.

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Hi Loesje,

This is a common question. Check this posting out:

Loesje replied:

Thank you Mike, this is great!

I feel sick in my belly when I read how some people view our most amazing Church. It really makes me sad. I'm so glad there are people out there who can give an amazing, accurate answer like you and Bob.

I am studying apologetics myself and absolutely love it! One day I'll be confident enough to answer these questions myself.

God bless,

Loesje
