I was told by a Catholic Mexican friend who wears a red string bracelet with the eye on it that it is for protection and they put them on babies right away to protect them from the evil eye.

I was thinking about getting one but am not sure how the Church would view these bracelets.

I wouldn't want to be participating in any witchcraft by wearing this or exposing myself to anything bad.

It is not consistent with Catholic practices to wear such a bracelet.

It is superstitious at the least and idolatrous at the worst. If you want to invoke the protection of God and his saints try Blessed objects such as:
