Khin Mar Htwe wrote:

Hi, guys —

I would like to know when an infant is baptized, does the priest need the hair they had at birth?

Most of the Tmail Christians (Tamil Nadu is a southeast Indian state) have told me that they need the infant's hair at birth but, after baptizing, they usually shave the infant's head.

  • Is this right or wrong?

Please explain it to me.

Thank you.

Fr. Jonathan replied:

Dear Khin,

The Catholic Church is universal and contains many local customs. What you are referring to with the babies hair sounds like a local custom.

I can confirm that there is nothing in Universal law concerning the hair of the infant. Perhaps you should just speak with the priest or deacon who will be doing the Baptism to find out more.

Fr. Jonathan
