Hi, guys —
I'm Kyle and I am 16 years old. My brother runs a Fantasy Football League and our draft was last night. My brother had to go some where and this resulted in my mom and I going to bed late.
We thought it was earlier but we missed Church on Saturday. Mass had begun at 5:00pm.
On Sunday they had a 9:00am Mass, so I set my alarm for 7:30am but I didn't wake up until 8:40am and I thought we'd be late to Church so I went back to sleep.
- Under this circumstance, is this a mortal or venial sin?

Deliberately ignoring the Lords Day and Mass is a mortal sin but you were not very deliberate about missing it; at least I would infer that from your explanation, in which case, it is only a venial sin.

My reply is a tad different than Bob's.
I would say, echoing Bob, deliberately ignoring the Lords Day and Mass is a mortal sin.

None of us can know the intent you had when you woke up on Sunday morning. There is more culpability involved if you were rationalizing or giving a false reason not to go to Mass.
Being late for Mass is better than not going to Mass at all. Bring this issue up next time you go to Confession and follow the Confessor's counsel.
Renewing our Sunday Covenant is important because it blesses our minds and bodies for what comes at us the following week.
When the faithful keep blowing off renewing their Sunday Covenant they can be more prone to erroneous views that this immoral culture is offering as permissible.
