Hi guys,

I'm 14-years-old going on 15 in August.

I've never had my First Communion because our family moved to Saudi Arabia when I was really young and there weren't really any churches there for me to receive the sacraments. Take note that everyone in my family has already received their First Communion . . . even my brother because he was able to have a ceremony before going to Saudi Arabia.

We recently moved back to our home country and my concern is my mom wants me to join Confirmation classes happening in our school in October. I'm worried because I'm not sure if I am allowed to be confirmed without having received my First Communion.

  • Given my situation, which sacrament should I receive first?

My mom told me Confirmation is the second sacrament Catholics receive after Baptism but the internet has two different answers.

  • Should I receive Confirmation first?

Bob replied:

Mika,

Most receive First Communion before Confirmation.

  • Have you had religious instruction while you were abroad?

If not, you have some catching up to do. Also, you should receive the sacrament of Penance before receiving your First Holy Communion to insure you are in the state of grace. I would meet with your parish priest and discuss the matter. He could provide the best recommendation as to how to proceed.

Perhaps a couple of meetings with the priest would prepare you for your First Communion, and then you could join the Confirmation program with your peers but he'll give you the appropriate advice.

God bless.
