Hi, guys —

Bless you for being here. I recently came across a prayer card for my grandfather; he passed in 1961. I have not seen a prayer card like this . . . ever. I am doing some research on my ancestors and came across the card.

The prayer card reads:

My Jesus, have mercy on the soul of Paul.
Died on May 6th 1961.

O Gentlest Heart of Jesus, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the soul of Thy departed servant. Be not severe in Thy judgement, but let some drops of Thy precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames, and do Thou, O Merciful Saviour, and Thy Angels to conduct Thy departed servant to a place of refreshment, light, and peace. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Scared Heart of Jesus, have mercy on him.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for him.

  • Was this a normal prayer for prayer cards in 1961?

No one in my family will talk about him — my aunts and uncles were all under the age of 14 when he passed and my Grandmother is no longer alive.

  • Why would this specific prayer be on it?

Thank you!

Jeanne

Bob replied:

Jeanne,

It doesn't seem that unusual with traditional piety in mind but I have not come across one like it. I'll forward it to an older priest friend of mine and see what he says.

Peace,

Bob Kirby

Paul replied:

Dear Jeanne,

It seems like a typical devotional prayer found on a prayer card, asking Jesus to have mercy on a departed soul.

It reminds us of how important it is to pray for the souls in Purgatory.

Peace,

Paul

Jeanne replied:

Dear Bob and Paul,

Thank you very much for the quick response.

Peace be with all of you,

Jeanne
