Hi, guys —

I received a decree from the diocese of Dallas to usethe Pauline Privilegeso I could be baptized and married in the Catholic Church. My question is:

  • Do I have to attend RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) classes to be baptized?

I was going through them but had to stop to get the decree.

Thank you,

Ronald

John replied:

Hi, Ron —

I believe the Pauline privilege has nothing to do with RCIA. RCIA is an important part of faith formation for someone entering the Church, especially if one is not baptized.

Becoming a Christian and a Catholic is huge step. By entering the Church, you agree to submit to Her teachings and disciplines. You also must profess that you believe that what the Church teaches, is revealed by God. That said, it's important that you know enough about what the Church teaches to make that sort of commitment.

A good RCIA program should explain the major doctrines and also help you in your spiritual walk.
I recommend you follow through with RCIA whether, or not, it's required and, in fact, I'm pretty sure, in your case, it still is.

John
