Hi, guys —

I am trying to find the Christian meaning of the name Wesley.

I've only found one source that affirmed it means western meadow.

I'm not sure how to go about telling a child his name means western meadow.

  • Do you know of any other meaning for this word?

Thank you,

Bonnie

Mary Ann replied:

Bonnie —

See if there is a St. Wesley that he is named after, or see if Wesley is also a derivation of Wenceslaus, a king and saint. If not, surely he has another name, because generally for Baptism
a saint's name or religious name is also required.

By the way, the meaning is lovely. Most names don't have holy meanings, even saints names. Mary, for example, means bitter in some of its forms.

Eric replied:

Bonnie,

There is technically a Christian association, if not a meaning. John Wesley was an Anglican cleric who founded the Methodist movement, now known as the Methodist Church. This however is not suitable for a Catholic context.

As far as I can find, there is no St. Wesley. I did see limited evidence on the web that Wesley has been used as a nickname for Wenceslaus, but unless the parents originally either named him Wenceslaus, or were inspired by the name Wenceslaus, this probably won't work.

  • Can you focus on his middle name?
  • How old is he?

Perhaps he can choose a meaningful Christian Confirmation name.

Eric
