Hi, Brenda —
In the Eastern Orthodox Church's
I believe they call Good Friday,
the Great Friday, for the reasons
my colleagues have given.
This is pure speculation on my part,
but part of the reasoning why the
Church chose to call this day Good
Friday was to emphasize that all
of creation:
- the earth
- the sea
- the stars
- the sun
- the moon
- and most especially, us, were
good, despite our continuing fallen nature.
If you re-read the beginning of Genesis,
you will note that after God created
each thing, He found it was good, so
on Good Friday, the good He created
was redeemed and sanctified by Our
Lord's blood on the Cross.
Hope this helps,
Mike
