Hi, guys —

  • How do we know that the day of preparation on which Jesus was taken down from the Cross was before a regular Sabbath day rather than before the special Sabbath during Passover?
  • In other words, how do we know it was a Friday when Jesus was taken down and not any other day?
  • Didn't Jesus say He would be in the tomb three days and three nights like Jonah was in the whale for three days and three nights? (Jonah 2)

I believe Jesus died on a Friday and rose on a Sunday, but I do not know the specifics of how we know this to be true.

  • Can you please help me understand?

Thank you and God bless! :)

Christa —

If you read the Gospel, it says that it was the eve of the Sabbath. Sabbath is Saturday, and it began in the evening just after Christ was taken down and laid in the tomb.  We know that He had the Last Supper on Thursday night which, for the Jews, was the beginning of Friday, because it was the first night of the Passover celebration.  We know that He was crucified on the next day, which was still Friday.

There are better explanations using the Hebrew months and dates. The point is that the 7th day of the week (which we call Saturday) was the Sabbath, and if you read the Gospel accounts carefully, you will see that Jesus was crucified on the 6th day, and taken down from the Cross before nightfall on that day.
