One reason is that He wanted to show
us the depth of his love. Romans
5:6-8 tells us:
6 You see, at just the right
time, when we were still powerless,
Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very
rarely will anyone die for a righteous
man, though for a good man someone
might possibly dare to die. 8 But
God demonstrates his own love
for us in this: While we were
still sinners, Christ died for
us.
(Romans
5:6-8)
It would be easy to wave His Hand
and say we're forgiven; but it would
cost Him nothing and it would not
have set an example.
Also, God established the law of
Moses, which Jesus fulfilled, and
by that law there was no forgiveness
of sins without the shedding of blood
(Hebrews 9:22).
That law, in turn,
might have been established for a
similar reason: It was costly to
provide animals for sacrifice, and
so forgiveness was costly. Just a
speculation, though.
