The practice is based on the nature on the Eucharist itself, it is a sign of unity and communion.
Those who don't share our beliefs are not in full communion with us, so it would be a false sign.
For those who do share our beliefs, baptism is the entry point. It is analogous to marriage:
first the vows, then the consummation of the marriage.
