Hi, guys —

Today while scrolling on Instagram, I saw a reel of a Christmas celebration. I opened the comment section, and a Muslim said,

"In the place where Jesus died there's war, people are dying, and this country is celebrating?" (Something like this).

Although the comment was serious, I was in a good mood and I jokingly (like the GigaChad meme against Islam) I spoke by myself "Yes."

I did it without reflecting on the gravity whatsoever, like a meme, also I wasn't not referring to anything, if not for the fact that Muslims always infiltrate in the comment section of Christian reels.

I immediately regretted it because I thought about it after saying "Yes.” I repented. I did not think about the seriousness of the message before making the joke; it was a time of mental distraction.

Today, I still received Holy Communion in the Mass because I thought it wasn't a mortal sin, although I felt guilty, because I did not reflect before making the joke. I'm very serious about the faith, yesterday I went to Confession.

  • Did I mortally or venially sin?

  { Was my inappropriate message on Instagram to an online Muslim, a venial or, mortal sin? }

Bob replied:

Ignazio,

Thanks for the question.

You did not sin mortally, though you fear you may have caused scandal, the act was done without forethought and intent.

We all do rash things, some have bigger consequences than others, but many of these things are no different than a child who does something really foolishly that has a disastrous result.  In those cases, while we may correct the child, we would certainly not treat him harshly or severely, for we know the regret is likely commensurate with the wrong.

Call it growing pains.  We learn, we grow, and hopefully it changes us for the better.

Peace,

Bob Kirby
