Piotr Malinowski wrote:

Hi, guys —

I had mentioned that we are not supposed to pray to angels.

  • As Catholics, when we pray the St. Michael prayer, are we praying to an angel?

Eric replied:

Piotr,

Praying to good angels is part of the Catholic faith.

Whoever told you that was mistaken. I would, however, confine myself to praying to the angels in Scripture (Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael) and to guardian angels, (whether yours, or someone else's, or to angels in general.) Never name angels.

Note also that this tradition means that we ask them to intercede with God for us and to help us, in particular on our path to salvation; we do not ask them to give us information or to speak to or appear to us.

Eric

Mike replied:

Hi, Piotr —

Just to add to Eric's answer one of the preeminent angelic prayers, many time said at the end of Mass, is the St. Michael the Archangel prayer.

Saint Michael the Archangel Prayer

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host —
by the Divine Power of God —
cast into Hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who prowl throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.

I'm sure you can easily find St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael prayers on  the web.

Hope this helps,

Mike
