Hi, guys! —

I have a question regarding annulments.

My sister is getting married to a non-Catholic who has been divorced.

  • Does he need to get an annulment in order for them to be married in the Church?

Thank you so much for your time!

Sincerely,

Amy

  { Does my Catholic sister's fiancé need an annulment for them to get married in the Church? }

Mike replied:

Hi Amy,

Thanks for the question.

If she sets up an appointment with her local parish priest, he will be able to review your sister's circumstances and determine the best course of action for her.

Depending on her situation, the Church would determine whether or not he is still married in the eyes of the Church. This is the best course of action to take at this time.

Mike

Fr. Nick replied:

Dear Amy:

This question would best be answered by your local Catholic priest, as there are a number of questions that would need to be answered before a determination of annulment could be made.

Some of the questions would include:

1. Was your fiancé's previous marriage his only one?
2. Was this the first marriage for his ex-wife?
3. Was his ex-wife Catholic?

Fr. Nick
