Hello,

I am a married, 35-year-old wife with two children: ages 2 and 5. I was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church. My husband was baptized in the Lutheran church, however his mother was Jewish. We did not get married in the Catholic Church.

After a lot of searching, we have come to the realization that we want to raise our children in the Catholic Church. The children have not been baptized yet and this is a cause of concern for me.

  • What steps do we need to take to become members of the Catholic Church again?

Thank you,

Kara and Brian

Hi, Kara —
Hi, Brian —

Thanks for the question.

You need to get your marriage convalidated. Just talk to the pastor of your Church about this.

If Brian had been previously married, the Church would research it to ensure that any previous marriages were not valid.

He would also have to agree to have the current and future children of yours raised Catholic. Seeing he appears to already have an interest in joining the Church, this shouldn't be a problem.
If he didn't have an interest at this time to join the Church, he would only need to:

  • to be a witness to your obligation to raise the children Catholic and
  • agree not to interfere with your Baptismal responsibilities to raise the children appropriately.

If your husband is being drawn to the Church, he may be interested in buying a cheap copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church on Amazon so he understands what we believe as Catholics.

While your on-line, it may also be smart to shop around for child-oriented Catechisms that the kids will easily understand for there age level. If they don't learn the faith in the home, you take a big risk in trusting that CCD classes at the parish will be good enough, even if there are well-meaning CCD teachers and instructors. I personally think Catholic Apologetics should be part of ANY CCD curriculum at any Catholic parish. You want to instill in them that asking faith questions is good . . . very good and healthy.

I have spelled out the whole process of becoming Catholic here.

Hope this helps,

Mike
