RC wrote:

Hi, guys —

My friend is Catholic. She recently had an abortion and wants to be forgiven.

It is my understanding that she can only be forgiven by a Bishop or a Priest that has been authorized to give such forgiveness.

  • Is that correct?
  • How do you find out if a Priest has been granted that authority before confessing to him?

Please answer.  This is very important to her!

Thank you so much,

RC

  { Who can forgive the sin of abortion and how do you find a bishop or priest who has this authority? }

Eric replied:

Hi, RC —

Technically this refers to lifting the excommunication, not her forgiveness. If she was unaware she was excommunicated by committing abortion, she would not be excommunicated.

I believe virtually all the priests who can hear Confessions have the faculty to lift the excommunication. Just have her:

  • go to Confession, as usual
  • explain the situation and
  • whether she was or was not aware of the excommunication
  • and he'll take care of it.

It's very simple.

Eric

Mary Ann replied:

RC —

I am the director of a post-abortion ministry, so I can assure you that every bishop in the United States has given faculties for that absolution to the priests in his diocese. If there is an exception I don't know about. Don't worry, the priest will handle everything well.

Please tell your friend to contact her local Project Rachel in order to find a priest that is trained and experienced in helping people who suffer from the aftermath of abortion.

Eric is correct about the excommunication but, at one time, it was also the case that priests were not competent to absolve from abortion.

In either case, local priests may both:

  1. lift excommunication and
  2. absolve her of this sin.
