Hi, guys —

My husband and I have been married for 2 years now and we have always wanted kids of our own. I have had two miscarriages in the two years we have been married. it's been about 7 months now since we started trying again after the second miscarriage (which was a blighted ovum).

We began to seek help from a fertility specialist. When the doctor checked my previous tests,
he said everything looked pretty normal and requested a semen analysis. The only way we knew how to get a sample was through masturbation. (We knew it was a sin but it was the only way we knew to get a sample.)

When we got the results, we were surprised to find that my husband had some sort of infection and low motility. He was prescribed antibiotics by our doctor for the next two weeks. He said my husband needed to release sperm before the next test. He suggested he either masturbate or we use a condom because he didn't know where the infection was coming from and didn't want me to be infected, if indeed, it was infectious.

That's when we had a talk with our priest who was pretty disappointed my husband went through with the masturbation. He said there was a perforated condom we could have used if it was available. If not, he said it would be better to have no child, at all, than to dishonor God.

Now, we are at a dilemma as to what we should do. We are from the Philippines and I've tried searching for the perforated condom or silastic sheath, but can't find any. I'll keep on searching, but my problem is:

  • What will happen if we can't find any here?

My husband is half way done with his medication, and we have to go back with semen again for analysis. Please help us.

  • How do we go about getting the necessary materials?

We would appreciate your help,

Thanks!

  { Since we want our own kids, how do we morally get a semen sample for our fertility specialist? }

Eric replied:

Dear DesiringOurOwn,

Masturbation is definitely not an option.

My non-professional recommendation is that you use the perforated condom and risk the infection, but I recommend you call the National Catholic Bioethics Center.

They can answer your question from a Catholic and medical standpoint.

Eric

Contact the people at:

They can provide you with the necessary materials. They can also help with your infertility problems, referring you to a doctor that knows the moral ways, which also happen to be the most successful ways.

Also, if your husband had an infection, you may have caught it and should be examined.

Mary Ann
