Sarah Long wrote:

Hi, guys —

I am 33 years old and my husband will be 35 in March 2010. We are expecting our fifth child in
July 2010.

  • Would it be wrong for us to permanently prevent future pregnancies after this one with a vasectomy?

We have taken (NFP) Natural Family Planning classes but my cycles have been irregular and often delayed by a year or more after pregnancy due to breastfeeding. Therefore, I have had two pregnancies before even having my first post pregnancy period when I can start to chart.

We are very torn about this as we love our children but our house is growing small and I often feel overwhelmed.

Sarah —

It would be wrong to sterilize yourself or your husband. You can indeed chart successfully while breastfeeding. I know many who did, as I did. If necessary, contact your local Creighton Model Fertility Care practitioner.

In any case, even were it true that you couldn't chart (which it's not), you could always wean,
if avoiding another pregnancy is that important.

Better to wean than to mutilate yourself contrary to God's law.

Mary Ann
