Jim McCrudden wrote:

Hi, guys —

  • Once procreation is not possible-due to age, what is the Church's teaching concerning sex between — older, non-married adults?

Jim

  { What is the Church's teaching about sex among adults when procreation isn't possible due to age? }

Paul replied:

Hi, Jim —

Sexual activity does not get its ethical legitimacy from the age of the couple or their capability to procreate. What gives sexual intimacy its moral legitimacy is whether or not the couple is married. Outside of the permanent commitment of marriage they do not belong to each other.

Therefore, sexual intimacy between two older unmarried adults who are past their procreative years is still a matter of serious sin because they are not covenantally bonded to each other in the union of marriage, and they have no right to become one flesh without that marital union first.

Paul
