Dear InTheMiddleOfCourtship,
Thanks for the question.
It's unclear what you mean by "a long-distance relationship" and "InTheMiddleOfCourtship".
- Do you know what this man looks like? or
- Have ever met him, face to face?
In addition, you mentioned nothing about whether you have ever dated this man.
If you can reply and clarify these issues, we can be of more help.
It seems strange that a practicing Catholic would ask another practicing Catholic to help him be closer to God. He should already know how:
- praying the Rosary on a daily basis, and
- living a sacramental life
is always a good start. If you just met this man on-line, over the web, but have never physically met, you're moving too fast.
Personally, I can see how internet dating web sites can initially bring people together, and I think that's great!, but before there is any talk of marriage, the couple should obviously physically meet, face to face, and start courting before anything more serious is talked about.
The Internet can be a valuable tool, if used properly, for building Christian character, but the Sacrament of Matrimony requires the total gift of mind and body by one spouse to the other and vise-versa. Building up an emotion tie with some you have never physically met, can lead to pain and disappointment down the road. The Sacrament of Matrimony involves marrying a person, not a picture.
My colleague Mary Ann addressed a similar on-line dating situation here:
Hope this helps,
Mike
