Hi guys,

I am a strong Catholic who usually defends my faith, however, I came across the genealogy of Jesus Christ by Matthew and I realized something which forces me to ask this question:

  • Why was Jesus the son of Abraham or David when He has no blood link and relation with Joseph?

To clarify this, if Mary was a descendant from David then it was apparent that Jesus was the son of David, but Mary was not a descendant from David, Joseph was.

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

  { Why was Jesus the son of Abraham or David when he has no blood link and relation with Joseph? }

Mary Ann replied:

Hi Tetaake,

Both Mary and Joseph were of the house of David, so the blood linkage is there. Official lineage, however, was calculated through the father.

Moreover, Israel adopted so many people and peoples into its tribes, putting them into a family and lineage, that many Jews were not blood descendants of one of the twelve tribes.

Hope this helps,

Mary Ann
