Hi, guys —

I had read something about Our Blessed Mother Mary in one of our local Charismatic magazines Shalom Times in regard to our belief that she is the Mother of God. It quoted the following Bible passage.

41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, 42 "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." 43 He said to them, "How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, 44 "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet"? 45 If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?"

Matthew 22:41-45

Here Jesus says David, by the Holy Spirit, calls Jesus as Lord because Jesus who being David's son was also the Lord, God Himself.

Similarly, in the nativity, the Scriptures tell us, Elizabeth is a cousin, kinswoman, relative of Mary in Luke 1:36 and that she was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke out with a loud voice calling Mary, her cousin, the Mother of her Lord.

  • Why?

Because Mary, being Elizabeth's cousin, was also the Lord God's mother.

Various translations account Elizabeth's greeting to the Lord's mother: Mary, as:

Good News Today's English Version
Why should this great thing happen to me, that my Lord's mother comes to visit me?

Darby Bible Translation
And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

I have rarely seen any of the apologetic web sites on the net use these verses.

  • Do they have another meaning?

I have another question about Scripture and Tradition. The Protestants received the basis of their belief: The Holy Bible from the Catholic Church who had preserved it from the beginning.

  • Am I correct in saying that the Canon of the New Testament Bible was Church Tradition, and therefore the backbone of Sola Scriptura believers, is based on the Tradition of the Catholic Church? — i.e. The Scriptures evolved from Tradition.

God bless you.

In Christ Jesus and Mary,

Alfred

  { Is the backbone of Sola Scriptura believers based on the Tradition of the Catholic Church? }

John replied:

Hi Alfred,

These verses can be used to prove the divinity of Christ and Mary as the Mother of God.
Moreover, the fact that John the Baptist leaped in Elizabeth's womb at the hearing of Mary's voice, speaks volumes about Mary's role as the first evangelist. In addition, we see that just as David danced before the Ark of the Covenant, the Baptist leaped before Mary who the Fathers of the Church call the Ark of the New Covenant.

With respect to the Scriptures, it is truly ironic that Protestants accept the Tradition of the Canon and then abuse the canon to try and prove Sola Scriptura.

It was indeed this irony that caused me to question my Protestantism and leave the pulpit.

Interestingly enough, Protestants also accept other Traditions not explicitly taught in Scripture like:

  • the Trinity
  • Christ as one Divine Person with two natures, one Divine and one human.
  • Monogamy, never explicitly taught in Scripture.

That's just to name the first few that popped off the top of my head.

John
