Sebastian Holmberg wrote:

Hi, guys —

I'm a 16 year old in Vienna and I have a question. I live nearby to the Stephansdom (St. Stephan's Cathedral). In the Cathedral, there are souvenir shops with mini replicas and postcards.

  • I know that Jesus himself condemned shops in churches by expelling them, so would it be wrong for me to buy one of those Cathedral replicas?

Sebastian

Mary Ann replied:

Hi, Sebastian —

Jesus did not condemn having a shop in the vestibule of the Church, or nearby.

He was angry that the Temple was filled with moneychangers, who took advantage of a regulation to use only Temple money and exchanged other currencies for it, often dishonestly.

Jesus said it had become a den of thieves. (Matthew 21:13)

Mary Ann
