Hi, guys —

After reading Joshua Chapter 1, I see that the Lord promises several times that Joshua and the children of Israel will possess the promised land. I also see that he is encouraged to be strong and courageous by both the Lord and the Israelites, so that he will be successful.

My question(s):

  • Was Joshua's success a guarantee?
  • Would we be reading about his story of success if he sinned, repented, and still
    got it right"
  • What importance does absolute obedience play into God's promises?
(I did not read anything that Joshua did wrong.)

John replied:

Hi, Chandra —

God is a God of Mercy. He is also the God of second chance, third chance, and so on.

That said, partial obedience is disobedience and disobedience brings consequences. Sometimes consequences we might never realize.

For instance, God promised Moses that he (Moses) would lead Israel to the promised land.
When they left Egypt, shortly after giving Israel the Ten Commandments, God told Moses OK,
go and take the land
. Instead, Israel decided to send twelve spies to scope things out. When the twelve returned, ten of the spies reported there were giants in the land. The other two, Joshua and Caleb, said: The Lord has promised us the land, we can take it but Israel believed the other ten and disobeyed God.

Well, that whole generation except for Joshua and Caleb, did not enter the promised land so Israel received the promise, but their disobedience cost them.

It's the same with us. If we disobey along the way, we wind up off track. Then we run into obstacles on our way back. It could be that while we were off track, we missed out on something God had for us.

John

Chandra —

It was guaranteed only if he trusted and obeyed the Lord.
