Hi, guys —
I have a dear Protestant friend who sent me an article which makes two propositions:
- the greatest obstacle for acceptance of Christ in Jewish believers is the Trinitarian concept of God as "One God in three persons".
The article goes on to sight multiple Bible quotes from both the Old and New Testament referring to God singularly and emphasizing the monotheistic doctrine of Judaism.
- the concept of the Trinity is never scripturally explained by Jesus in the Gospels nor is it mentioned by the Prophets, Peter, Paul or John. In fact, the article quotes Jesus in
(Mark 12:29)
"The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord."
The article concludes with the idea of the Trinity was created by men some three centuries after the time of Jesus and can only be described as:
"the unknowable, unfathomable mystery of the Trinity" and
"a foundation of the Christian faith that's beyond human comprehension".
- My question is, where can I find solid scriptural, Trinitarian references, and explanations?
Thank you very much.

Jim —
Every place in the New Testament in which Jesus is called "kyrios" (Lord) is an indication of His divinity.
The Jewish translation of the Hebrew Scriptures used kyrios for Adonai, the Hebrew substitute for the name that was never spoken or spelled out.

Dear Jim,
Thanks for the question.

No matter how much you look you will never find any direct reference to the word Trinity in the Bible because it is not there.
What can be found are trinitarian references in the Bible and trinitarian references from the Early Church Fathers who lived from 100 A.D. to 850 A.D.
- Scriptural Reference Guide for The Trinity
"Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness . . '"
(Genesis 1:26)
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19).
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)
"But Peter said, ‘Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.'" (Acts 5:3-4)
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all" (2 Corinthians. 13:14).
I was impressed by this site too:
I found other trinitarian references from the Early Church Fathers here:
Hope this helps,
Mike
