The Mass in its basic structure has been this way since Jesus ascended into Heaven and has
been the central prayer and worship for all Christians. As you may know, there are two parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Word reminds us of Our Blessed Lord's Teachings and the Eucharist gives us the spiritual strength to fulfill our calling while warding off that bastard, Satan.
With time, make-shift altars, used in various places, were ultimately moved to Catholic Churches where the Mass
was celebrated. I believe the very first Masses were held in synagogues, which corresponds to Judaism which was a sacrificial faith like ours.
