Hi, guys —

Hello and God bless you all for providing so many answers.

While using the bathroom I was bored and decided to go check out Twitch TV after a long hiatus, it is a game streaming platform but also a streaming platform in general.

While scrolling, I saw a girl who was nude but holding a paper towel rolled over her chest as I read the stream description, she was putting oil on herself, but I found the girl attractive.

I didn't linger much and kept looking at other streams. Eventually, I ended up seeing her stream a couple of times and looked at her; although I was tempted to click on her stream, I did not, even though I realized, hey, this girl is very pretty, but that's as far as I let her get into my mind.

After realizing how tempted I was getting, I decided to get out of there and block Twitch TV on my browser; apparently, I already blocked the site, but I put it at twitch.com instead of Twitch TV. So here I am now, scrupulous over whether I should go to Confession before receiving the Eucharist because I love Jesus above all these things.

Any help on discerning the gravity of any sin would be greatly appreciated. I personally am not sure if this was a mortal sin or venial sin.

Again I didn't see anything because she was covering her breasts, and I didn't click into her stream to watch

Thanks! and Pax Christi

  { How should I discern the gravity of these sins and therefore whether I should go to Holy Communion or not? }

Eric replied:

Hi, Evan —

If you didn't linger over the images and made a concerted effort to avoid it once you realized it was a temptation, and as long as you didn't seek out the images and it sounds like this is the case, I don't think you committed a mortal sin. You'd have to entertain the thoughts while not caring that you were entertaining the thoughts (i.e. being aware that what you were doing was wrong and making an explicit choice to ignore that and continue to entertain the thoughts). If you see, are tempted, and then leave once you realize it's a problem, that can't be a mortal sin.

If you think you are scrupulous, be sure to find a single Confessor and stick with him, and obey what he says. Don't consult other sources for opinions if you are dissatisfied with his answer, e.g., if you think he's not being "strict" enough.

Eric

Thanks, Eric!

That helps a lot.

I think girls seeking attention on-line is a huge problem and as guys trying to avoid lust the internet is such a minefield; I've blocked all social media for the time being.

Because even Face book has been the cause of my fall into mortal sin in the past, I realize nothing is ever truly safe.

Evan
