Mike,

I was searching for a snail mail address for the Pope when I came across your site.

I just returned from the Post Office where I was checking on the postage to send a letter to the Vatican City. I was told that I need a country, but I see in your side note that the Vatican is an independent nation and that I should not put "Italy" on the envelope.

  • Any suggestions on how to address this with the postal staff so I can get the stamp I need and have the letter on its way?

Thank you!!

  { How do I properly address a postal letter I wish to send to the Vatican or the Holy Father? }

John, the Italian in our AskACatholic family, replied:

Mike,

I've confirmed that the addresses on the "Where Do I write" page are correct.

Sue could try writing:

Vatican City, Vatican

sort of like:

New York, New York, or
Vatican City, Rome, Italy

I think the Post Office guy has it wrong and should probably look it up. If they absolutely won't accept "Vatican" as a country (for postal reasons), then the only other country she can use is Italy.

Mike,

Thanks for your rapid response.

I went back to the Post Office, armed with a print out of your side note. This time I got a different clerk, and when she asked:

"What country?"

I said "It's its own country." She was friendlier than the first person I dealt with, and she did exactly what John said. "Well, let me look that up", she said. And voilà!, 80 cents later my letter was airmailed and on its way.

I did re-address my envelope from what I had the first time from a different website
(listing 00120 first). I used:

"Vatican City State 00120"

which to me, looks like City, State and Zip Code, so I definitely like your format better.

Thanks again,

Sue
