The following question was asked by an audience member on an episode of EWTN Live

Hi, Fr. Mitch —

At the end of every show you ask every priest, bishop, or cardinal to give the audience a blessing over the airway.

  • Does that blessing really come over the T.V. to me at home?

Thanks!

Andrew

  { Can that EWTN priestly T.V. blessing really come to me at home over the airways? }

Fr. Mitch replied:

This is an issue Pope John Paul II had to deal with; one the Early Church never had to because they never had television or radio.

The Pope has said:

A blessing is granted over the television and people can receive the blessing over the airways, but only if it is live.

If the priest is blessing you on a show you have taped, like on VHS recording tape, you can't receive the blessing.

You do get the blessing for crossing yourself but not from the priest blessing you on a taped show you are watching.

Fr. Mitch
