Michael J. Cremin IV wrote:

Hi, guys —

  • Can someone tell me what the Vicar General of the Curia does?
  • What is his role, and how does he fit into the structure of an archdiocese?

Thanks!

God bless,

Michael

  { What is the role of the Vicar General of the Curia and how does he fit into the Church's structure? }

Fr. Nick replied:

Hi Michael,

Thanks for the question. I hope the definition below helps.

Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia

The highest ranking official in the Diocese after the Bishop, the Vicar General has full jurisdiction in all matters which the Bishop has not reserved to himself or others by the common law of the Church.

As Moderator of the Curia, the Vicar General is charged with coordinating the ministries and services of the diocesan departments and, in the absence of the Bishop, presides over meetings of the Executive Staff.

Hope this helps,

Fr. Nick

Fr. Francis replied:

Dear Michael,

A vicar general is a priest, or sometimes an auxiliary (assistant) bishop, who acts as an administrative assistant for the bishop of the diocese.

His basic job is the ordinary coordination of the various offices and ministries of the (arch)diocese.

Father Francis
