Hi guys,

  • What is the name of the house where a specific order of priests have their main office?

All I can find or uncover is the motherhouse.

Thank you,

Marie Alice

Mike replied:

Hi Marie Alice,

I think it would be called an Abbey.

Richard replied:

Marie Alice,

The answer depends on the order:

  • monastic
  • mendicant
  • missionary, or
  • other, and

on the level of administration:

  • regional, or
  • worldwide.

motherhouse is a useful term, but it has various meanings. It could refer to the very first house (historically) in a community — which might not be where the superior general of the order works any more or motherhouse can refer to one specific local community that sends out members to found another local community.

Fr. Nick replied:

Dear Marie Alice,

If it is a monastic order, the priests residence would be called a Monastery.

Diocesan priests would be the rectory or Priest's residence.

Some religious orders would call their homes Priory or Friary.

There are so many different religious orders, you would need to contact them to get the appropriate designation for their priest's residence.
