Hi, guys —

I have heard that you have to give a donation to a priest if he blesses a:

  • Cross
  • vehicle
  • necklace
  • etc.
  • How much of a donation are you suppose to give him?

Monica

John replied:

Hi Monica,

I would venture to say that you heard wrong!

Blessings are not bought nor sold.

We can make donations or give offerings to parishes and religious orders.

Often times a small donation is requested to have a special Mass said for a particular intention, called a stipend ($5-$15), but there is no requisite donation for a blessing.

Obviously no priest is going to get rich saying Mass but Our Lord does tell us in the Scriptures that, "a worker is worth his wage." (Luke 10:7)

If you choose to make a donation to the parish, religious order, or mission you are always free to do so.

John
