Hi, guys —

I am concerned about a preschooler who seems to have an abusive, imaginary friend; a teenager that wears a leather jacket and smokes. The little one is pushed around and he argues with him as well.

His sitter shared with the parents that the imaginary friend was waking the preschooler up in the middle of the night and telling him leave the house and run into the street. The number of dangerous stories is shocking. The imaginary friend has been around since the preschooler was
2 years old. I just don't think a 2 year old could come up with the description of a smoker when no one around him smokes. Our family has started to worry that this is a haunting.

  • What does the Church think of demons haunting little ones?

I've read a book written by a Catholic exorcist; he seems to think children are the most susceptible.

  • How would one, in a sense, exorcise a child without scaring him?
  • How can evil attach itself to such an innocent person?

Hi, Beth —

The parents should take the child to a priest, and to a counselor. There could have been a real person, the experience with which the child internalized , or there could be some demonic involvement.

If you have anything to do with the child, there is nothing to prevent you from praying for the child, and from putting holy water on him.

If the child is already a Christian, and talks to you about it, tell the child to say the name of Jesus.

As to how or why this happens, if it is diabolic, there are many possibilities, but ultimately it is a mystery. The child is innocent and needs to be protected.
