Hi, guys —

  • I am 13 years old, strongly believe in God, and plan to be confirmed into the Catholic faith, but sometimes I wonder, if God loves us so much, why does He allow illnesses to harm good people?

Both of my grandmas suffered from horrible illnesses (Alzheimer's and Cancer) and because of this, one is now dead and the other can only say, yes or no and she probably doesn't even know what I'm saying to her.

Both were extremely close to God and they truly believed in Him but nevertheless, this still happened to them.

  • Why were deadly illnesses ever created if God can do anything and He loves us so much?

Just a little confused.

Thanks,

Dear Confused —

God can do anything except override our freedom. Adam's free will let evil and death into the world. The free will of others continues to cause more evil. Our ignorance also causes evil, as was the case with the Romans, who lined their aqueducts and water pipes with lead so that dementia became common. The widespread use of hormones in agriculture and in human life causes cancer, as do many other things.

God did not promise us that this life would be paradise, only that it's the preparation for the next life. He also showed us that suffering, carried with Him, can help to save ourselves and others.

Your question is a good one, and one asked by wise men through the ages. What we know is that God is good, evil exists, and the good suffer. Christ has shown us how to live in this world, and that following Him and His way will bring us to eternal life, where there is no pain or suffering. God bless both your grandmas. You must love them a lot.

  • Ask your deceased grandma to pray for you
  • Pray for your grandmother with Alzheimer's, and
  • Know that your presence with her is felt and is a comfort.

Mary Ann
