Hi, guys —

I was divorced eight years ago. I am in the process of having my marriage annulled. I've spent almost five years working on it. I have been informed it should be approved anytime now and I'm very excited. I have always stayed faithful to the Catholic Church and, in fact, have had my children in Catholic schools since kindergarten. My son is now in college and my daughter is in Catholic high school. We go to Sunday Mass regularly.

I want to remarry but the man I am in love with is not Catholic. He has never even been baptized. He is a good man but he does not (at this time) want to be baptized and does not attend Church with us. He knows marriage in the Catholic Church is important to me and that I want to continue to receive Holy Communion.

My question is:

  • Can I get a dispensation from the bishop to allow me to marry this man?
  • Would this then be considered a non-Sacramental marriage?
  • And if so, does that mean I can no longer receive Holy Communion?

Would we be required to go to pre-Cana classes which I don't think he would object to.

Please advise. I have not met with my local priest; he is new to our parish. I was waiting on the annulment but now I am worried I won't be able to marry this man if I can't receive the sacrament of the Eucharist anymore.

Thanks,

Linda

Mary Ann replied:

Linda —

Once you receive your annulment, you are free to marry. You will need a dispensation to marry a non-Catholic, but this is routinely granted.

The marriage is non-sacramental but valid, and you can receive the Eucharist.
