Dear Pastor!

It's very nice to find a web site where people can ask their questions and get answers from a Catholic.

  • How old are the books in the Vatican library?
  • Does the Pope have many books which illustrate the societal customs of the Jewish people during the time Jesus lived?
  • How old are the books, scrolls, earliest manuscripts, and their copies?

Yours faithfully,

Richard replied:

Hi, Victor —

We are not pastors, but faithful lay Catholics. Nevertheless, thanks for the compliment.

Your questions would require a lot of research through various web sites. You should probably check out the Vatican library web site. It's the place to go for information on its collection and history.

The web site for the Vatican Secret Archives, whose name has been changed to the
Vatican Apostolic Archives, may help as well:

With a little research, you may find the answers to your questions.

Hope this helps,
