Hi, guys —

I have been recently studying the subject of consciousness, i.e. self-awareness; things along those lines. I referenced my Christian library (a small, sacred library I have been building over the years) and I have yet to find anything by Catholic authors that touch on this topic. In lieu of this, I have a few questions:

  • Did St. Thomas ever delve into this subject as he was writing his Summa?
  • I consider consciousness as another extraordinary privilege and gift bestowed upon us — human creatures — as we are created in the Image and Likeness of God, but what are we to say about this quality or attribute?
  • Do you know how I can contact someone at a Vatican educational institute for a discussion on this topic?

Larry —

St. Augustine [New Advent][Wikipedia] writes a lot about human consciousness.

You might try reading some of his works, especially the Confessions.
