Hi, Mary —
On the contrary, God gives us the
commandments because he loves us.
It's like a parent saying to a child,
- Don't play out in the street. or,
- Don't take candy from strangers.
The parent isn't saying:
- I'll only love you if
you don't play out in the street. or
- I'll love you only if you
don't take candy from strangers.
How absurd! Rather, the parent lays
down the commandments in order to
protect the child from a danger she
cannot see or appreciate. Likewise,
God gives us commandments to protect
us from the natural consequences
of sin.
Consequently, they are expressions
of His great Love for us. Meditate
on Psalm 119 sometime. (Number 118 in Bibles such as the Douay-Rheims;
it's the longest psalm, about God's
law.)
