Hi, guys —

I just wanted your thoughts and prayers on something that has affected my life over the past few years.

I am on medication for (OCD) Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and anxiety but there are still so many times I feel that I don't have free will and that I am supposed to do evil things, even though in my heart fights such thoughts. They always come though, even when I try and accept them as an annoyance.

Please pray for me and grant me some words of encouragement or advice.

Thank you and God bless.

Jim

  { Can you give me any encouragement or advice for my OCD: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder? }

Mike replied:

Dear Jim,

Thanks for the question.

Although I'm not familiar with OCD, based on the little I've read, I would suggest a few things:

  • although it may be difficult, if possible, try to keep a daily prayer life. This could include:
    • reading a portion of the Scriptures
    • meditating on some of the mysteries of the Rosary
    • getting to daily Mass as well as making your Sunday obligation, and
    • getting to Confession on a regular basis.

If you don't have one, I would try to find a spiritual director who is faithful to the Church. This is a Catholic priest who is willing to take time out of his routine to give spiritual advice and direction to other Catholics in the Church. Call your local diocese and ask if there are a list of spiritual directors within your diocese.

It's important for you to know Jim that with all the confusion, pain, and annoyances you are going through, Our Lord is right there with you. He understands how difficult this is for you but He is there to help and assist you, even through tough times. The most meritorious thing you can do is offer up all this suffering and confusion to Him. The saints did this on a regular basis.

Human suffering to a certain extent is a mystery. Nevertheless, we know that, because Our Lord only wants what is best for us, anything He permits to happen to us, is for our own good.

We may not see the good with our finite, earthly mind, but His Love for us is so great we can't imagine it; yes, even when we fall short and are sinning, He is still there loving us, drawing us back to do the right thing.

Remember, Jesus was a Man like us in all things but sin. This is Catholic doctrine!

To surmise:

  1. develop a daily prayer life of some kind
  2. find a spiritual director who is faithful to the Church who can guide and assist you, and
  3. (the obvious) take any required medication.

Mike
